I wanted to write to you all together to say a huge thank you for looking after me, the baby and Jon over the last 9 months. From the first moment we met Jenny and Rachel, I have never doubted that you were the ‘ones’ for us. Jon sometimes asked me if I had any preference which one of you answered the pager when the time came – and my honest answer is that each of you would bring your own unique qualities and abilities to me – I could see myself in labour being encouraged by Vicky’s strength and down to earthiness, being uplifted by Rachel’s sense of fun and being calmed by jenny’s quiet nurturing nature. I would have been happy whichever of you took that call.Â
Â
Jenny – I would like to thank you specially having been with Jon and I throughout the whole process. In the end it didn’t turn out as planned but somehow now this doesn’t seem to matter. Of course it would have been wonderful to have the home waterbirth we had planned, but I feel now that with yours and Rachel’s help, I gave it my very best shot. When we did finally transfer to hospital, I felt calm and not disappointed after all because it had been my decision, and that you were there to support me with the choices I made.
Â
Looking back on it now, I find that already the C-section itself has faded into the background and what I remember is lying in the bath at home with a glass of wine, chatting to Rachel about interior design ideas – and Jenny’s calm soothing presence through those very long hours.
Â
I am also so grateful for all your help and advice post-birth. As a mum already, I didn’t really think about the advice you would be giving but in fact it has been incredibly reassuring to have you all popping in to check up on me and the baby. I have been able to mention any small niggle or concern and have had each one sorted out straight away so that it has just been a blissful, stressfree time to enjoy this new chapter of my family life.
Â
Vicky – your help with breastfeeding has been especially useful – you made it all so much easier and more enjoyable than last time.
Â
It goes without saying that I have the utmost respect to you all as professionals, but more than that I have a huge admiration for you as women – for all you have done for me and other women you look after. For making the births of our babies a unique and uplifting experience that we know in our hearts it ought to be.
Â
Thank you.
