I trained as a midwife with Jenny and Vicky at Anglia Polytechnic University in Chelmsford. I became interested in midwifery after having children of my own and realising what a difference a midwife can make to someone’s childbirth experience. Even as a student, I was passionate about the normal birth process and believed in women’s ability to birth their babies. I was extremely lucky in my training to have a mentor who was very like-minded and an inspiration to me. I was fortunate to attend a great many homebirths and waterbirths and quickly gained a lot of confidence in these areas. I spent most of my time in the community working with a caseload and experienced how effective one-to-one care can be. After qualifying, I worked in an NHS hospital for a couple of years. I found this to also be an invaluable part of my professional development. I gained experience in many different deviations from the normal and the emergency situations that arose from these. With the high volumes of women passing through the system, I have encountered many varying conditions and situations that have only helped to build upon my knowledge. The system was very frustrating though and I constantly felt I was not giving the best possible care to women. I therefore moved into independent practice where I have the time to provide both holistic and individualised care on a one-to-one basis. It is a pleasure to work this way and really believe it makes a difference to women to have a midwife that they know. I also have a diploma in massage which is very useful during labours and am a qualified aqua natal teacher. I run classes at local pools which is great fun and very enjoyable. As well as having a fulfilling career, I have a wonderful family life. I live with my husband Andrew, and two children – Christopher and Rebecca. My hobbies include playing badminton, reading and shopping. I also love going on holiday and am happiest when planning my next getaway! |
